The Mercenary

As the 26th Regiment slowly realized they'd overestimated their own abilities, it was Miriam Conly who tried to warn her commander against Corruption's manipulation. But his paranoia turned against her, and she was forced to flee for her life, going rogue in the Hunt.

Unseen Reason: Marksman

While The Mercenary's first commander became overwhelmed by gnawing paranoia, her second-in-command's reaction to the Corruption was even worse: he wanted to use it to make stronger soldiers. She'll die before that happens, using this rifle to be the reason he fails.

Mimicry’s Mark & Mimicry’s Mark: Silencer

Even before his mind deteriorated, The Mercenary's former commander would mock her in front of her comrades to diminish her ideas. If she ever sees him again, she plans to use this pistol to make sure the only thing he imitates again is a corpse.

You Can Run

If you suspect an unseen stalker is watching you from the shadows, fear this Knuckle Knife. For whether you're fleeing in fear of a crushed skull or a punctured lung, the lesson you'll ultimately learn will be the same: You cannot hide from The Mercenary.

The Mercenary (Avatar)

Miriam Conly learned to hide early. Hailing from a broken home in the wilds of Colorado, she relied on her aim to bring game home for dinner. For years, she yearned to leave that place, or better yet, for the power to do more than wait and hide. When an army recruiter showed up in town, she saw her ticket out, and ran away to enlist.

Malnourished as she was, it didn’t take much to disguise herself as a young man. After training, she was assigned to a unit under Commander Whitlaw, where she distinguished herself with loyalty, stealth, and a sharp eye. She greatly preferred this new life. But the longer time went on, the more difficult it was to hide her secret. When she confessed, Whitlaw only asked her what difference her words made in the face of her actions. The unit turned a blind eye, and Conly stayed. She followed Whitlaw without hesitation when he deserted to find the unit’s missing scouts, even though she couldn’t have imagined what awaited them at their destination.

Conly soon found she could stomach Corruption. The part of her that could feel surprise and horror had died long ago. But it was hard to watch her comrades succumb to the disease, to dig their graves, and to shoot them herself when they clawed back out. It was harder to watch the survivors grow twitchy, then frantic, then raving mad. It was hardest to watch it happen to their leader.

When Whitlaw ordered Conly to execute a fellow soldier whom he believed was Corrupted, Conly looked into the young man’s eyes and saw he wasn’t sick. He was only questioning his orders, his choices, and this cursed place. She refused to shoot. Whitlaw raised his gun against her, instead.

A fight broke out amongst all the soldiers. In the chaos, Conly escaped: twice a runaway, twice a renegade. She camped between the trees and stayed supplied by selling military secrets to other Hunters. She quickly became known as The Mercenary: a disciplined soldier in her own right, but beholden to nobody except her own pocket. She vowed to herself that she would not re-enlist.

She would fight Corruption her own way, under her own command.
