East Sea is set in a fictional world based on the Baltic Sea during the 1400-1500 era. It's a mix of dynamic naval battles, building out your floating colony (your ship), managing its crew, and trading.

Naval battles

During naval battles you take direct control of your ship and can order your crew. Early cannons were rare and unreliable, so you will need to rely on archers and grappling hooks. The game takes simulation seriously: grappling hooks aren't a "press X to board" button. Hooks are physically simulated ropes that your crew must pull to get closer to the enemy's ship. Most equipment needs sailors to function: enemies won't be able to turn if they have no one at the rudder.

The ship and the crew

Your ship is a floating home for your crew. You can change the layout of the ship in any way you want, place the equipment in any place you like. As you go through the adventures, your crew will change and grow. Each person has a name, skills and equipment. The more you invest in them, the more efficient they become.

Trade and politics

Trading isn't simple. Each city will treat you differently depending on your rank across different countries and cities. Being respected in a city will grant you discounts, the right to own warehouses, unlock trading lucrative staple goods. On the other hand, if you decide to live independently you'll need to rely on smuggling and even piracy to make good money.
