Run the night desk of a Vietnamese hourly motel during Ghost Month. Check each guest's ID, their money and the lobby camera, then hand over a key or refuse them. Some guests are already dead. Seven night shifts, a rules note that grows each night, and one thing you never do: turn around.

Ghost Month. The motel stays open till 5 a.m.

In Vietnam the seventh lunar month is Ghost Month, when, people say, the gates of the underworld open. You work the night desk of Motel 49, a roadside hourly motel in the Mekong Delta. Every guest needs a room. Not every guest is still alive.

The rules taped to the desk

  1. Light the incense before opening up. Relight it if it goes out.
  2. Pays with joss paper: refuse.
  3. ID expired before 2000: refuse.
  4. Not on the lobby camera: refuse.
The list gets longer every night.

Your shift

  • A young woman in a white áo dài at your window: "My husband booked a room."
  • An old woman only asks to rest a while. The lobby camera shows an empty counter. Not every ghost is out to scare you.
  • Behind you, a whisper: "Hey… turn around." Mom always said: don't.
  • The lights dip, the incense smoke bends, and the red stool by the altar rattles. "Chair: Nope nope nope. Pray, man, PRAY!"
  • The rooms are full, so you nap in 101. Someone lies down beside you.
  • A man checks in with his "colleague" for an hourly meeting. Then his wife arrives, and the yard camera catches three of them leaving on one motorbike.
And somewhere in the night, a guest insists you dance with her.

The full game

  • Seven nights to the full moon of Ghost Month, and five endings decided by your cash drawer, your ledger and how you treated the dead.
  • New rules every night: wet footprints, shadows when the camera is down, regulars you have to recognize.
  • At dawn, Aunt Chín calls and tells you who they were. The Book of the Departed keeps every name you have met.
  • Between guests, the lobby TV runs fake breaking news, a freeze challenge and a Ghost Month mukbang, and a lodger rings the desk.
  • Vietnamese and English, every line on screen as text. Gentle mode tones down the jump scares and flashing lights. Any night can be retried from the pause menu.

Rain on a tin roof, offerings on the pavement, a quốc lộ in the Mekong Delta, smeary PS1 graphics. Made in Vietnam by one developer.

Add it to your wishlist to hear when the motel opens for all seven nights.

Content notice: recommended for ages 16+. Jump scares with sudden loud sounds and flickering lights (Gentle mode reduces both). Themes of death and the dead, Vietnamese Ghost Month customs, and an hourly-motel setting with adult situations, including infidelity, implied and never shown. No nudity, no gore. A work of fiction.
Privacy: the game sends anonymous gameplay data (the nights you reach, your choices, playtime, settings) to PostHog in the United States. It is on by default; turn it off any time in Settings, "Send anonymous gameplay data".
