You start with $1,000, big ambitions and one dusty room on 46th Street. Name your jewelry shop, hang the sign for your grand opening and get to work in New York's Diamond District.

Is it real gold?

Walk-ins sell you chains, rings, watches and loose diamonds. Weigh it, scratch it, drop acid on it: a fake fizzes. Make your offer on the real pieces, flip them for profit and check the gold market every morning.

Fill the cases

Order on your laptop and get unpacking at the back door: rings in velvet trays, chains on hooks, watches on pillows. Set your prices, haggle the way nobody does at the supermarket, take cash or card and keep up when the morning rush hits its peak.

Make it at the bench

A customer wants a pear cut sapphire in white gold, size 7. Pick the stone, cut it and craft the setting. Take cleaning jobs on the side: wash the grime off old pieces and send them home sparkling.

Go viral

Film everything on your phone: the fake that fizzes, the free gold tray most people on the street won't take, a sneak peek of your new cases. Post the content, and the next morning a gold rush lines up at the door. Seven celebrities walk 46th Street, and the ones you serve go on your photo wall.
